History
The city of St. George, Utah can date back to it's earliest settlers in 200 B.C. The Virgin River Anasazi inhabited the area from approximately 200 B.C. to 1200 A.D. and left behind amazing rock art and ruins. The Pauites were the next to take over the area and began farming and hunting. The first Euro-Americans to settle in the area was the Dominguez-Escalante Party in 1776.
By 1854, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints established an Indian Mission in the Santa Clara area, as well as setting up experimental farms in the valley. The city St. George, was named after the LDS apostle, George Albert Smith, who appointed settlers to establish the town. In memory of the 50 years of settlement in the area, the LDS church established the Dixie Academy. The church operated the academy until the school became a a state 2-year college in 1933. Since, the school has changed locations and is known as Dixie State College, offering enrollment to nearly 10,000 students.
St. George is one of the fastest growing areas in the United States, providing an ideal place for families looking for a warm area to establish a second home. It is the largest city in Washington county and is the eighth largest city in Utah. The scenic city attracts people from all over to come see her red rocks.
